Gif Tutorial: Simple Coloring (Using Color Balance and Adjustment Layers) 

This tutorial will demonstrate how to go from this

to this:

Program: Adobe Photoshop CS5
Difficulty: Intermediate
Steps: 8

Note: This tutorial CAN be used for icon/edit coloring but is intended for gifs since it’s fairly “basic”.

STEP 0

Make a gif!

For some, this would be fine “as is”. I, however, think his skin looks too yellow and I just want my gif to “pop”.

STEP 1

Sharpen (Press CTRL+F)

STEP 2

Go to Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Color Balance (a small menu will pop up, hit ‘ok’)

These are the settings you will want to use for Midtones

Shadows

Highlights

STEP 3

Click the “Create New Adjustment Layer” icon on your Layers Tab (it looks like a yin yang symbol) and select “Solid Color”

Set the Layer Mode to “Difference”, 100% Opacity

STEP 4

Create another Solid Color adjustment layer

Set the Layer Mode to “Normal”, 9% Opacity

STEP 5

Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Color Balance

STEP 6

Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Levels

STEP 7

Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Exposure

STEP 8

That’s it!
